Boston mayor says too early to say BPL president has his full support

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Boston Mayor Marty Walsh says he's not ready to throw his full support behind the highly paid president of the Boston Public Library just yet, after two pieces of artwork disappeared

"I think it's a little too early to make that statement," Walsh said when asked if she had his confidence.

When FOX25 Political Reporter Sharman Sacchetti asked Walsh if he thought she should resign, he said, "I'm not saying that either, I mean there's an ongoing federal investigation."

Tuesday after a closed door meeting at city hall, FOX25 was the only camera to catch up with the library's President Amy Ryan as she left out a back door. In her position at the library, Ryan makes $180,000 per year and answers to a nine-member board of trustees.

"We had a productive meeting," she said of her meeting with Walsh.

When Sacchetti asked the mayor about it, he called it productive too, but added he didn't get a lot of answers.

"The questions still have to be answered. There has to be more, and it's difficult because of the ongoing federal investigation," Walsh said.

The mayor went on to say he's "not happy" about what happened and ultimately believes the "responsibility of the artwork is the department heads and ultimately the mayor's office."

FOX25 has obtained the audit of the library. Commissioned by the city, it found special collections are not protected, valuables are not kept safe, are randomly stored, and are ripe for internal theft.

The library received $33 million in funding from Boston this year. A nine-member board oversees the library, a board all appointed by the late mayor Thomas Menino. Two members were reappointed last year by Walsh.

When asked about the mayor pressuring the board, as he controls the funding, he told us "I have some concerns of where we are at the library, and those missing prints and the protocol, there's an audit we're gonna do a full review of the audit and see where we go from there."

Police and the feds are looking into the possibility workers stole the artwork up to a year ago.

Sacchetti did ask to interview the library president Wednesday, but was told she was not available.
