2 pieces of art missing from Boston Public Library

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Boston Public Library's McKim building is home to 200,000 works of art, and now two of them are missing.

One is a tiny self portrait etching by Rembrandt, and the other is an Adam and Eve print by Albrecht Durer. The library has no photograph or digital copy of its missing work.

The art is missing from a third floor secure area. They were not on display, but they were available for the public to see.

According to a police report, the items were first noticed missing on April 8, and reported to police on April 29.

The library is still looking for the art, and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said he is concerned.

"It's not good. We have to better track what we have for artifacts in the city of Boston. These two pieces are very expensive pieces of art and they've been missing for quite a while now. It's not right," he said.

The biggest art heist in history happened right across town right here in Boston here at the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum. At the library, one Rembrandt is missing. But back in 1990, thieves stole three Rembrandts from the museum.

The Gardner heist still unsolved.

Museum security director Anthony Amore said there is good reason to suspect theft in the library case.

"If they believe there is still a possibility that they are in the building, I have no reason to doubt what they say. However, art theft is an enormous world wide problem. It numbers in the billions," he said.
