CHARLESTON, S.C. (
) — The man alleged to be involved in a shooting that left nine people dead at a historic black church in South Carolina Wednesday is in custody, the US Attorney General confirmed late Thursday morning. Just after 6 p.m., he waived extradition and was back in South Carolina Thursday evening.
He was in court Friday and his bond was set at $1M. He is due back in court on October 23 and then again on February 5, 2016.
On Friday, CNN reported that Roof had confessed to police and said that he had wanted to start a "race war."
Roof was charged with nine counts of murder and one weapon possession charge, according to the Associated Press.
Authorities were searching for a suspect since the shooting late Wednesday night, and the FBI identified him Thursday morning as
. He allegedly shot and killed six women and three men during a service at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Police arrested Roof during a traffic stop in Shelby, North Carolina, about 45 miles from the shooting scene, Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said. Local police in Shelby made the arrest.

One survivor recalled that Roof told her he wouldn't kill her, but that he was going to "spare" her, "so you can tell them what happened." An assistant clerk in North Carolina says an extradition hearing for suspect lasted just 10 minutes Thursday, and he waived his right to counsel. At the hearing, Roof waived his right to extradition and was flown back to South Carolina.
Waiving his right to counsel means Roof will either represent himself or hire his own lawyer.
On Thursday afternoon, a list of names of the victims were released. They are:
