IMAGES: 1 person killed in violent crash on Route 28

SALEM, N.H. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- One person has died following a violent crash on Route 28.

Just before 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police tweeted that they had closed the highway between Hampshire Street and Salem Ford as they worked to clear the crash scene.

Police say that 26-year-old Michael Gomez of Lowell had been driving his Honda Civic southbound on Route 28 when he crashed with a Honda Civic being driven by 33-year-old Phillip Carter as Carter was pulling out of a parking lot. The impact sheered Carter's vehicle in half and he was thrown from the vehicle.

Carter was taken to the hospital, where he was later to pronounced dead.

Officials say speed was a contributing factor is the crash and are waiting on the results of toxicology tests to determine if drugs or alcohol may have been involved.
