BOSTON (
MyFoxBoston.com / AP) - Boston police say an 8-year-old girl has died and a 12-year-old boy is injured after being struck by a car late Saturday.
The children were struck at about 11 p.m. on West Selden Street in the Mattapan neighborhood of the city.
Police said the girl was pronounced dead at a hospital. The boy was hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
On Sunday, the girl's mother identified her as Yadieliys Deleon. Her mother told FOX25 she was riding her bike with her cousin when the two were hit.
Witnesses said the car hit a parked car and struck a fence, and the driver fled on foot. James Horton, a 45-year-old Dorchester man, was arrested Sunday morning in Brockton.
"It's a tragedy," said Boston Police Commissioner William Evans. "But to see someone would leave the scene and leave two young children lying in the street, it's a greater tragedy."
Police do not know how Horton ended up in Brockton.
"All I want is justice," Yadieliys' mother Yalitza Camacho said, crying, on Sunday.
It is unclear if Horton was speeding or under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the crash occurred. But neighbors say they have been complaining about fast drivers on West Selden Street for years.
"It's very dangerous," said resident Hilton Clark. "Cars coming back and forth."
Horton is expected to appear in court on Monday.
