CANTON, Mass. (
MyFoxBoston.com) -- Three men were arrested early Sunday morning after they allegedly fired multiple shots into a car on Route 138 and Washington Street in an incident that may have been fueled by road rage, and were arraigned in court on Monday.
According to Canton police, a man called 911 at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning to say just as he had pulled off the highway and onto Washington Street, also known as Route 138, a vehicle pulled beside him and fired several shots at his car. The man also reported more shots fired as both cars continued a short distance along Washington Street.
The man's car was struck five times, but no one was injured.
"There's no indication that they either knew each other or that there was any provocation," Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz said.
Mansfield police stopped the suspected vehicle and arrested the occupants, 27-year-old Yancey Williams and 35-year-old Louis Whitehead, both of Boston, as well as 37-year-old Arthur Williams of Randolph. The three men were charged with armed assault with intent to murder and multiple firearm charges.
Police said bullets were found in the suspects' car that matched shell casings from the BMW that was shot. In court Monday, the assistant district attorney said 10 separate shell casings were recovered in a 3-mile stretch of road.
The assistant district attorney called the men career criminals, but one family member told FOX25 the men were innocent.
"He's a father. He takes care of his kids and he's a real stand up dude," said Whitehead's sister. "They're victims too. That's not their life."
Mike Valcanas called 911 moments before one of the people in the BMW did.
"The pattern of it just seemed unusual," he told FOX25.
The assistant district attorney said the car that was shot at actually ended up following the car where the suspects were allegedly shooting from.
