BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The jury in the marathon bombing trial made a decision Friday and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is now on death row.
Here are only some of the reactions that poured into the newsroom Friday afternoon:
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh reacted to the news, saying, "I want to thank the jurors and the judiciary for their service to our community and our country. I hope this verdict provides a small amount of closure to the survivors, families, and all impacted by the violent and tragic events surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon. We will forever remember and honor those who lost their lives and were affected by those senseless acts of violence on our City. Today, more than ever, we know that Boston is a City of hope, strength and resilience, that can overcome any challenge."
Survivor Sydney Corcoran was just 18 when she stood at the finish line with her mom. After Tsarnaev was sentenced, she tweeted, “He took away his own right to live.”
Boston Police Commissioner William Evans released the following statement: “It is my sincere hope that today's verdict will bring with it a significant level of comfort and solace to all hurt, harmed and impacted by the attack on our Boston Marathon back in April of 2013. While no decision will fully erase or help us completely forget the horror and pain suffered by so many on that fateful day twenty five months ago, it is our hope that each passing day will bring with it a level of closure. The job of a juror is never an easy one especially in a case of this magnitude but those who served on this jury should know that the men and women of the Boston Police Department not only appreciate the time and efforts that went into today's decision but we also support the decision made. Regardless of how you feel about the death penalty, today was also about sending a message. And, the message sent is one that says terrorism in our city will not be tolerated. In closing, our thoughts and prayers remain with families of Martin Richard, Krystle Campbell, Lingzi Lu and MIT Police Officer Sean Collier.”
BBA President Julia Huston released a statement that read, in part: "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the survivors and the families of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. While the Boston Bar Association opposes use of the death penalty in any case, we respect that it was a difficult process for each juror and we respect the legal process that was so carefully followed in this case. I'm proud of what the BBA has added to the public discourse on this issue."
"Our thoughts are with the survivors and victims of this senseless act of terror. I want to thank the jurors for their service to our Commonwealth and our country. What is clear is that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev tried to strike fear in the heart of a city, and failed miserably. Attorney General Maura Healey said. "While this trial may be completed, we will never forget those that we lost and the strength and resilience that our community showed in the face of such evil.”
Dic Donohue, who was seriously injured in the Watertown shootout, said, "Just over two years after the events that impacted us as a community and a nation, we can finally close this chapter in our lives. The verdict, undoubtedly a difficult decision for the jury, gives me relief and closure as well as the ability to keep moving forward."
"We have an enormous amount of respect for the jury and their hard work. The trial and sentencing was a painful but necessary process. As always our thoughts today are with the victims, their families, the survivors and all those affected by this heinous act. We fully support the jury's decision and thank them for their dedicated service. We also want to thank and recognize the City of Boston, the staff at the federal courthouse and the public at large for their support throughout the past two years," said Carlos and Melida Arredondo.
Carlos was at the finish line on the day of the marathon helping the injured. He was seen running toward the chaos while others ran away.
