Body language expert determines if Brady was honest about deflategate

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- When Tom Brady broke his silence at Salem Sate after the NFL investigation found the Patriots likely deflated footballs and that Brady was generally aware of the violations, the questions were swirling.

What did he know? Is he telling the truth? Or is he hiding something?

FOX25's Sharman Sacchetti spoke with a body language expert to find answers. When we showed Brady's interview to Boston College Body Language Expert and Doctor of Psychology Joe Tecce, he picked up on the cues right away.

"He questions the audience, he's very comfortable, turns questions back to the audience that's all good stuff," he said.

He studied Brady's hands, his face, how many times he blinked, a telltale sign, he says, of someone who's lying.

"His blink rate went up to 46, which surprised me, because that's pretty high," he said.

In the end, his scientific findings?

"I would say, yesterday he was not lying," he said.

In fact, Tecce says Brady was relaxed, ad-libbing, smiling, and comfortable.

"There was nothing last night to indicate he wasn't telling the truth," he said.

So how does it compare with his situation in January, when he was asked directly if he was a cheater?

Tecce looked at that too, and found Brady was telling the truth.

"Absolutely," he said.

Tecce tells Sacchetti there are ways to tell if someone is actively lying, even professional sports figures who are used to the glare of the media spotlight. He does say it is tougher to figure out if they're withholding information.

The NFL is reportedly considering discipline for Brady due to the deflategate scandal.
