BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- In court Wednesday during the marathon bombing trial, the defense attempted to show the jury a different side of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
The defense showed the side that Tsarnaev's friends and classmates saw. And one witness, a friend from UMass Dartmouth, broke down as she remembered what Tsarnaev was once like.
"You knew you were going to have a good time, if you were with Dzhokhar," Alexa Guevara said in court.
She frequently cried on the stand, remembering Dzhokhar as a kind and supportive friend with a corny sense of humor.
But there was also this, less than a month before the Boston marathon bombings, Guevera remembers hanging with Dzhokhar and friends in Cambridge during spring break. They wound up on the banks of the Charles River. Dzhokhar grabbed a backpack filled with fireworks from the car and lit them off, she said.
She remembers Dzhokhar jumping through the sparklers. Guevera broke down at one point, and the defense attorney asked why she was crying.
"Because I really miss the person I knew," she said.
The defense called high school and elementary school teachers who remembered a kind-hearted and smart student who got along well with others.
Cathryn Charner-Laird, Dzhokhar's 3rd grade teacher said, "I remember how hard he worked. It's not easy to come to school when you don't know the language. He never gave up."
Also two paramedics described Dzhokhar and his brother Tamerlan's ambulance calls. Michael Sullivan recalled Tamerlan even after being run over by the car Dzhokhar was driving, was fighting with first responders, resisting their attempts to save him. He was pale, he was sweaty, Sullivan testified. He went on to say that Dzhokhar made eye contact with him and other first responders and they suspected he was in shock.
Less than 12 hours later, Dzhokhar was bleeding from his legs and face and was transported from Watertown.
Paramedic Laura Lee testified when Dzhokhar was asked if he was allergic to drugs, he answered and said he was allergic to cats. And on the ride to Beth Israel, Dzhokhar was asking about Tamerlan, who was already dead.
Dzhokhar's UMass Dartmouth friend will be back on the stand Thursday. Testimony resumes at 9 a.m.
