Outgoing MBTA GM to receive almost $28K in unused vacation days

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- On her way out, MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott is cashing in.

FOX25 Political Reporter Sharman Sacchetti has been asking for the information all along, and through a public records request, has learned Scott is receiving $27,499.88 in unused vacation time.

"This is a real slap in the face to taxpayers," State Representative Geoff Diehl said.

Sacchetti asked Diehl is the taxpayers getting their money's worth, and he said, "That's the real problem."

He went on to say, "She was taking over a trip a month during her tenure here and yet still has I guess vacation days accrued to her that we're having to pay for?"

In fact, in another records request Sacchetti made, receipts show more than one month after she said she was quitting, Scott spent more than $700 on a trip to a conference in New York. Receipts show that on March 29, she took an Amtrak train to New York City, but the MBTA general GM did not take the MBTA to South Station. She took a cab.

Scott was making $220,000 a year and signed a three year contract in 2012. She announced she was quitting her job in February during the height of the winter storms that hit the area, even though her contract wasn't up until December.

Also this week, the governor's special panel of experts put out their report on how to fix the MBTA, exposing everything from excessive absenteeism to bad management.

The report calls for sweeping changes, including installing a fiscal oversight board and selling off T real estate.

"I thought the report was well spoken," said Paul Regan, the executive director of the MBTA advisory board.

The group represents 175 cities and towns served by the T. He says the fiscal oversight board is a good idea.

"The idea of five outsiders coming in, I think that can work," he said. "I think it's the only thing that can work at this point."

Sacchetti did ask to speak with Scott, but never heard back from the MBTA on that request.

The MBTA did, however, respond to say Scott is entitled to her payout. A spokesman also defended her trip to New York, saying managers from other major cities also went to the conference.
