Patrick talks possible position at MIT after term ends

Posted: Updated:
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Governor Deval Patrick says he may take a position with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he leaves office in just a few weeks.

Patrick was at MIT on Tuesday for an event.

"Are you taking a job here?" asked Fox 25 political reporter Sharman Sacchetti.

"We're talking about a very loose affiliation," Patrick responded, adding "it's not a faculty job with the innovation institute."

There has been a lot of talk about where the governor will end up after he takes the lone walk down the State House steps.  Governor Patrick has said he will return to the private sector.

During a symposium at MIT, the school's leadership made no bones about wanting him here as a fellow.  When asked what he'd be doing, Patrick would only say "that's what we're talking about. As I say, it would be a loose affiliation, not a full time gig."

Governor Patrick says he's still pursuing another job in the private sector and hopes to stay in Massachusetts.

"I've talked to a lot of people in a lot of places, mostly not about full time jobs, different projects," he said.

Patrick said he wants to "take a step back, catch my breath" after leaving office.

MIT officials praised the governor's commitment to the innovation economy, and pointed out his many trade missions.

In the last year, Patrick has taken five taxpayer-funded trip. The latest was in September, something he called "an innovation partnership mission" to Denmark, the United Kingdom and France.

Patrick has long denied he was using those trips to build his portfolio.
