Homeland Security secretary on chokehold death case protests

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- While Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson was in Boston, talking about ways to protect the country against the threat of terrorism and lone wolf attacks. His visit comes one day after thousands marched on Boston Common in protest over a Grand Jury's decision not to charge a white police officer in the chokehold death of an unarmed black man.

Fox 25 Political Reporter Sharman Sacchetti asked the secretary about the protests, and he offered this for those who are angry about the situation: "Channel their energy, and their disenchantment in a positive way toward positive engagement in the political process, in a nonviolent, positive way. We can bring about change if we do so through consistent engagement in the political process."

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans says he's proud of the way his officers handled the protesters Thursday night. Mayor Marty Walsh says the city can't be afraid to change as a police force, and when asked about reforms, the mayor said police often review how they do their jobs.

"If anything was learned out of what happened, particularly in New York, and for Boston, is that we're constantly changing the way we deliver policing in the city and we're going to continue to evolve and I think the way that they handled the situation last night certainly was one of those ways of evolution as far as learning how to do crowd control," Mayor Marty Walsh said.
