MyFoxBoston.com / AP) -- Democratic U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen defeated Republican challenger Scott Brown on Tuesday, winning a second term and blocking his return to Washington from a second state.
Though many news outlets called it for Shaheen early on, the race heated up as the night went on. For a while, the race was a dead heat, and Brown even pulled ahead at some points. But Brown made his official concession speech just after
The 67-year-old Shaheen is a former New Hampshire state senator and governor. Tuesday's election was her eighth win in the state.
Brown won a special election in Massachusetts in 2010 to replace the late Democratic U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy. Brown lost that seat in 2012 and moved to New Hampshire last year.
Throughout the campaign, Shaheen emphasized her longtime service to constituents and cast Brown as an outsider who doesn't understand New Hampshire. Brown blasted Shaheen as a blind follower of President Barack Obama.
Their race was one of several close contests to determine whether Republicans win a Senate majority.
