Coakley, Baker focus on preventing defeat as election approaches

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Both candidates for governor Martha Coakley and Charlie Baker are focused on not just winning, but on not losing a second race.

In the final days of this campaign, is it high time for one of them to take a risk?

"I certainly feel like we've got momentum here," Coakley said.

She may feel like she has momentum, but so far polls show she's been unable to break away from Baker in a race that will almost certainly go right down to the wire.

"I'm feeling really good about where we are at this point," Baker said.

Perhaps but are both candidates, who have lost previous races, playing it too safe? Are they merely waiting for the other to somehow trip up in the last few days of this race?

FOX 25 Political Reporter Sharman Sacchetti asked them.

Coakley doesn't believe that she's been playing it safe.

"I disagree that we've been playing it safe. I started last September in a vigorous primary. We worked every day with 35-40 forums, we've got a very aggressive ground game," she said.

Baker doesn't think he played it safe either.

"Because I really do want to talk about what we can do to improve our economy and create better schools and bring what I would sort of call fiscal discipline and bipartisanship to Beacon Hill," he said.

With just days to go, Coakley and Baker answered questions on a range of issues. On Wednesday, she went after him on taxes and accused him of wanting to raise fees instead.

"You know that's the Mitt Romney shuffle, I'm not going to raise taxes but your fees will go up," Coakley said.

And Baker went after Coakley for her interest in looking at a graduated income tax instead of a flat tax structure, something the voters of Massachusetts have rejected soundly at the ballot box several times over the past 20 or 30 years.

Is that big enough to make a difference?

Sacchetti asked both candidates if they felt like they needed to do something big, and both essentially repeated their campaign's talking points. Both sides are counting on turnout in their favor on election day.
