BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The leading candidates for governor are not surprised at all by the latest poll results showing they're in a virtual tie.
"No new news, we're not paying attention to the polls," said Democrat Martha Coakley. "Obviously this is going to be a close race, we knew that."
Republican Charlie Baker said he feel "gratified" by the response he's getting from voters, and added that he's "looking forward to the next 36 days."
Will it mean they'll step up their rhetoric in the final days of the race? FOX 25 Political Reporter Sharman Sacchetti caught up with them at a tech and innovation forum in Cambridge.Coakley criticized Baker for not supporting the earned sick time ballot question, and also on taxes.
"I think my Republican opponent has a tax plan that gives breaks to corporations, and is looking for a trickle down effect. We know that doesn't work I think the voters of Massachusetts know that doesn't work," Coakley told Sacchetti.
Baker opposes question four, which would let workers accrue paid sick time. His plan would exempt bigger companies from any requirement, but he says he would respect whatever the voters decide.
"Look if the voters vote for something, I'll support the voters, but I have said all along I support earned sick time and what I wanted is to see a more flexible policy," Baker said.
A consistent theme in this race is the lingering gender gap. The Suffolk Boston Herald poll showed Baker trailing with women by 11 points, and Coakley trailing with men by 11 points.
"I said from the beginning of the race that I was gonna chase 100 percent of the vote and I was only sort of kidding. We wanted to run a campaign that would be compelling to all people in Massachusetts," Baker said.
Coakley says she hopes "everybody votes."
"We hope to have a good turnout. Democracy benefits when everybody turns out, and frankly the issues I'm talking about are ones that resonate with men and women," she said.
Since the race is so tight, Sacchetti asked Coakley and Baker if they're concerned about the effect the independent candidates could have, potentially siphoning votes.
Coakley said no, and then said she believes voters will appreciate her campaign. Baker never answered yes or no, but said it's good that voters are paying attention.
