Candidates campaigning on Primary Day despite low turnout prediction

Posted: Updated:
(MyFoxBoston.com) -- Talk about a lack of enthusiasm: The Secretary of State is predicting between 15 to 20 percent of registered voters to turn out in Tuesday's primary.

Still, Democrats and Republicans are out there giving it one final push.

"I'm excited for tomorrow," said Democratic candidate for governor Martha Coakley on Monday. "We're taking nothing for granted."

We caught up with Coakley, who is the Democratic frontrunner, in Malden. She says she's working straight through until the polls close, and has knocked on more than 100,000 doors.

"I know whoever wins tomorrow, Democrats will be united to make sure that we're successful come November to continue the great work that this governor has done in investments in innovation, infrastructure in education."

Treasurer Steve Grossman still trails Coakley by double digits even though he won the endorsement of the Democratic Party. We caught up with him in Peabody, where he told us he believes undecided voters are breaking his way.

"This is not over. This is gonna be a barnburner," said Grossman. "When it comes to jobs, when it comes to running state government effectively, keeping every promise I made I can go up against Charlie Baker.  Go toe to toe with Charlie and become the governor of this commonwealth November 4."

In West Roxbury, former medicare and medicaid chief Don Berwick was knocking on doors. He keeps registering last in polls, but believes he knows what voters want.

"I intend to win. And I think I have the best chance of beating Charlie Baker," he said, adding that Massachusetts voters "don't like the status quo, the politics as usual. They want something different. I'm not a politician. I'm bringing really fresh ideas and experience and problem solving to the governor's office."

Republican Charlie Baker may be facing a primary from Tea Partier Mark Fisher, but Baker is heavily favored to win.

"I'm nervous," Baker said. "It's the day before an election, so I'm nervous."

He says he's been out since last September trying to get his message out to voters.

"We've spent tons of time cris-crossing the state for the last year to prepare for this, and I think our message about more jobs and stronger schools and the end of one party rule is resonating."

Other primary races to watch include the Sixth District Congressional seat, where incumbent John Tierney is facing a challenge from Democrat Seth Moulton. The Attorney General's race between Democrats Warren Tolman and Maura Healey will also be a good one.

The polls open Tuesday at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
