Parolee acquitted of assaulting girlfriend

PEABODY - A paroled killer from Beverly has been acquitted of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and other charges stemming from a Valentine's Day argument with his former girlfriend.

The Salem News reports that Charles "Chucky" Doucette Jr. was found not guilty Thursday. Had he been convicted, he could have faced a lengthy prison sentence.

Prosecutors say the 51-year-old Doucette dragged his girlfriend alongside his truck and threatened to shoot her during a Feb. 14 argument.

Doucette's lawyers said the girlfriend, 47-year-old Melissa Markus, was the aggressor, and she was drunk and angry that Doucette was breaking up with her. The defense said Doucette was trying to get away.

Doucette is on parole from seven life sentences for a 1987 killing in Salem and two home invasions. He was released in 2007.
