WORCESTER - A Worcester youth baseball league has canceled games until further notice after gunfire near the field this week sent players, parents and coaches running for cover.
No one was hurt.
The Tom Ash Little League canceled games scheduled for Thursday and will hold a meeting next week to discuss what to do about the situation.
League officials say a baseball and a softball game were underway Wednesday evening when five to seven gunshots were heard in the neighborhood. Police investigated but did not find anyone injured and did not make any arrests.
Police have since stepped up patrols in the area.
Mayor Joseph O'Brien tells The Telegram & Gazette that gunfire near youth sports is "unacceptable."
League official Steven Viner says most parents and players want to keep playing.
