NEW BEDFORD (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A New Bedford man accused in the horrific beating of his girlfriend's son will remain in jail.

A dangerousness hearing was held for Elvis Garcia yesterday in New Bedford District Court.

Prosecutors say Garcia beat the 4-year-old boy with a belt and some sort of cord or rope. The little boy also has cuts and bruises all over his body.

Detectives said the abuse was the worst they'd ever seen. The child has been at Children's Hospital for more than a week and will undergo surgery today. Prosecutors call Garcia a threat to children.

The child's mother is also facing charges, accused of endangering her son and allowing the abuse to happen. She's being held without bail.

The Standard-Times reports that defense attorneys showed a video in court they say proves that Garcia and the boy had a loving relationship.
