WORCESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) -- Police are investigating after a woman and her child were shot in Worcester Monday.
A woman and her 2-year-old child were shot near Belmont Street at about 8:30 p.m., police say. The mother was released from the hospital after treatment for a gunshot wound to the arm. The child is being treated for a gunshot wound to the chest at UMass Medical Center, family members said he is expected to survive.
Police say the incident began when the woman accidentally nearly hit the shooter with her car. Investigators marked at least six gun casings on the ground.
The shooting happened on the same night as a community meeting to address the spike in violence in Worcester this summer. Police have blamed much of the violence this summer on warring gangs.
