BOSTON -

Days before the Bruins were due to lose the rights to forward Carl Soderberg, they traded them to Colorado in exchange for a sixth round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.

In essence, a move to get something instead of nothing as Soderberg was due to become a free agent on July 1 and was not expected to return to the Bruins. This early access to Soderberg will give Colorado an exclusive chance to sign him to a long-term extension if they so desire.

The Bruins originally owned the draft pick they received from Colorado as part of the Soderberg deal.  Boston traded the pick to the Avalanche on March 2, 2015 in the trade that sent Jordan Caron to Colorado in exchange for Max Talbot and Paul Carey.

The Bruins hold the 14th pick in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft, scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Sunrise, FL.
