BROCKTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) --A 12-year-old boy says the lessons his mother taught him paid off when two burglars broke in when he was home alone in Brockton Thursday.
"I got everything ready to go play video games. So then I went to go use the bathroom," the boy said.
That's when he heard the strangers who had broken into his home. Neither the child or the mother are being identified in order to protect their safety.
The little boy, who we are calling Lou, immediately called his mother who was at work when he heard the commotion.
"I felt powerless not being able to be close enough to protect him," Lou's mother said.
But she had armed her child with the knowledge of exactly what to do in an emergency.
"As soon as I heard voices, I ended the call with my mom and I called dispatch," Lou said.
He called 911 and told the operator that he didn't have time to get to his safe spot. So he stayed in the bathroom, and hid under the tub.
Soon, two police cruisers arrived, but Lou's ordeal wasn't over. The robbers were still inside the home of Hillberg Avenue.
"The guy said check the bathroom and my heart stopped. He kicked the door open and he lunged at me and said 'stay there, stay in there,'" he said.
"I thought they were gonna grab him I wasn't sure what they were going to do to him," Lou's mom said.
By then, police had the home surrounded. Officers kicked in the dront door and say they found the suspects in their own hiding spot on the basement.
Daniel Griffin and Khary Daise face several charges including felony breaking and entering. The family says they are grateful for the police.
"Their response was awesome," Lou's mom said.
"They comforted me, they took me outside, they bought me an ice cream," Lou said.
