Malden woman charged with fatally stabbing mother

Posted: Updated:
MALDEN, Mass. (AP) -- A Malden woman charged with fatally stabbing her mother has been ordered held without bail and is expected to undergo a mental competency evaluation.

Twenty-four-year-old Sharlyn Savain pleaded not guilty to murder while being arraigned Tuesday in Malden District Court.

Savain is accused of killing her 58-year-old mother, Marie Luxama, in a Main Street apartment Monday. Police responding to a request for a well-being check found Luxama suffering from multiple stab wounds. She later died at a hospital.

Police Chief Kevin Molis called the slaying a "terrible act of domestic violence."

Savain's lawyer says her mental competency will be evaluated. She is due back in court July 6.

Luxama's landlord told police that Savain told him that she killed her mother and she was going to kill him too.
