NEWTON, Mass. (
MyFoxBoston.com) - It's the winter that will never end for some Massachusetts homeowners who are still dealing with.
"Not only did we have to deal with the snow and not being able to get out of our house for several days at a time but we also had the ice dams,” Maren Rossman said.
Contractor Peter Buzzelle says her unique roof was perfect for them.
"It was kind of like a perfect location for an ice dam to form and grow because it's such a low sloping roof,” he said.
Buzzelle said water from the ice dam seeped from the roof into the walls and ceiling. It wasn't just upstairs in her daughter's room; it was downstairs in the living room area and cost thousands in damage.
It cost months of headaches and even now, in mid-June, there are still problems.
"Hell. It seemed to never end. The repairs took a long time; removing the walls. Drying the walls and it seemed like it just happened yesterday,” Rossman said.
The Rossman family's home in Newton is not alone.
"This is the worst I've ever seen it,” Buzzelle said.
He said homeowners across the state are still dealing with winter-storm related repairs.
Contractors are overloaded, they are forced to deal with emergencies first and cases like Rossman's now.
"It was almost like a flash sort of situation where a day or two or weekend where the ice dam was so severe and then it started melting and getting into the wall,” Buzzelle said.
But there are preventative measures that can Rossman said she will be using next winter.
"Raking your roof and we'll also probably also have some heating lines on the roof by next winter,” she said.
