KINGSTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Ancient remains were discovered at a field in Kingston last week, foiling plans the town had to build new sports fields.
Native American human remains were recently found at the Opachinski Sports Complex, according to the
Patriot Ledger. The discovery prompted officials to postpone the construction of new ball fields.
The Patriot Ledger reported that a projectile point found on top of the burial feature is between 9- and 11,000 years old. The town's selectmen voted Tuesday to stop work at the site.
The historic preservation officer from the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head-Aquinnah was grateful for that decision, but says there is more work to be done.
"Even though this decision has been made, our job is not done, because that site has been disturbed," she told the Patriot Ledger. "If anybody knew that site as it was before, and as it is now, there's a lot of healing that has to go on for the site, the Wampanoag people and also for the town."
