BOSTON (
MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Red Sox fan who was hit and seriously injured by a broken bat last week at Fenway Park is thanking the A's player whose bat injured her for his gesture of kindness after the incident.
During Friday night's game, Oakland A's third baseman Brett Lawrie was at the plate when he hit the ball for a groundout, his bat breaking in the process. A large piece went flying into the stands and hit Sox fan Tonya Carpenter. She was
rushed off the field in a stretcher and taken to the hospital, where she suffered life-threatening injuries.
Carpenter
remained hospitalized Wednesday in fair condition. On Tuesday, a post to a
website fundraising for her recovery posted a photo
of the flowers and note Lawrie sent that read "Sending my thoughts and prayers, Brett Lawrie."
Along with the photo, a message was posted to Lawrie noting that his flowers were the only ones by her bedside.
"On behalf of her family, we thank you for this lovely arrangement. You brought a smile to her face, the fragrance fills the room and she thinks of her garden," the message read. "We accept these flowers and appreciate your thoughts and prayers."
The message went on to ask people across the country for their prayers for Carpenter's continued recovery.
