Police have person of interest in custody after 2 people stabbed at Tufts

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com / AP) - Police have a person of interest in custody after an early morning stabbing at a Tufts University fraternity house sent two people to the hospital.

Tufts spokeswoman Kim Thurler says the stabbing occurred on Sunday at the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house on Professors Row, a street that runs through the Boston-area campus. The two victims were stabbed in the neck.

By around 1:20 p.m. Sunday, Somerville police said they had a person of interest in custody and that he is a student at the university.

The victims, who are not Tufts students, knew their attackers, said Somerville Deputy Police Chief Paul Trant.

Tufts officials had asked students to seek shelter and lock their doors around 5 a.m. Sunday while police responded to reports of an assault.

"Our cellphones started to go off, and we had alerts on our emails," one student said.

"And they just said to go inside, lock the doors and close the windows," another student said.

The shelter in place for the Somerville/Medford campus had been lifted around 8 a.m. Somerville police said they had no record of a history of trouble at that fraternity house.

One student said he didn't think the fraternity had been hosting a party on Saturday night.

"Definitely, definitely not a party," said Michael Miele. "If there was a party it definitely would be a lot louder."

Both victims were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. A 20-year-old has a serious injury, and a 19-year-old's injury is non-life-threatening.

Jim Russell, executive vice president of the national fraternity, says it's working to determine the circumstances and cooperating with police. He says only a small number of men are living at the house for the upcoming Tufts summer term.

Just by coincidence, a couple of weeks ago Somerville police installed a surveillance camera nearly across the street from the frat house. It was placed there to monitor a planned protest. That camera may help in determining what happened.
