BOSTON (
MyFoxBoston.com) -- Residents in multiple Boston neighborhoods are on high alert after many people's cars have recently been targeted by thieves, their car tires stolen in the middle of the night.
Boston police officials say thieves are targeting new Hondas, especially Accord models, between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., mainly in West Roxbury, Roslindale, and Hyde Park area.
"I've lived on this street so long and nothing like this has ever happened," said West Roxbury resident Diane Broderick. "We looked and the car was there, all four tires were gone the lug nuts were on the ground."
Roughly a dozen incidents have been reported since start of the year. Police believe multiple suspects may be involved, and the thieves are likely selling them secondary market, where the tires and rims can be sold for up to $1,500.
A manager at Dedham Wholesale Tire in West Roxbury said he has seen a spike in customers needing replacement tires after they were targeted. He said he received roughly six calls related to tire thefts in the last few months, when usually it just happens once or twice a year.
The Boston Police Department's auto task force is working to investigate.
