Quincy police see uptick in car break ins

QUINCY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Police have issued a warning for one Boston suburb and are telling Quincy residents that they've seen a sudden spike in car break ins.

Victim Dan Leuken said, "I lost everything in my trunk. I just came back from vacation, had a whole suitcase back there, they took the whole suitcase."

Lt. Jack Sullivan said that in the last month, the city has been averaging a car break a day.

"It's an unusual number. For the month to have one every day on average. We may go on a spurt where we see three to four in a neighborhood for a week, then we don't see anything for months," he said.

And in some of the car breaks, thieves smashed windows to get inside. But police say, locking your doors can still go a long way.

"If you make it more difficult for someone, and that in this case is locking your doors, leaving your car in a well lit area, not leaving anything visible in your car, then the odds are, they are not going to break into your car," Sullivan said.
