Police: NH parents overdose while giving child a bath

Posted: Updated:
MANCHESTER, NH (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Two parents were arrested after police say they overdosed on heroin while giving their three-year-old child a bath.

Police say they spoke with Mary MacDonald, who said she was the grandmother of the three-year-old. MacDonald told officers that she lives with her son, who is the father of the child, and the child's mother.

MacDonald said that on December 4, 2014 she saw 21-year-old Eric Carter and 24-year-old Stephanie McCassin in the bathroom with the child, but grew suspicious when they got quiet inside the room. When MacDonald when to check on them, she said that both parents had passed out while giving the child a bath.

MacDonald said the child was unharmed and seemed oblivious to the fact that both parents had passed out. The grandmother called 911 and Carter and McCassin were taken to the hospital for an apparent overdose.

Carter and McCassin were arrested on Thursday and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. They were released on $1,000 bail. Carter is due in court on May 22; McCassin is due in court on April 21.

McDonald told police that she was the primary caretaker of the child.
