City where volleyball was invented seeks Olympic matches

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) -- The mayor of Holyoke is suggesting that if Boston is awarded the 2024 Olympics, his city should be tapped to host volleyball matches.

In his recent state of the city address, Mayor Alex Morse noted that Holyoke is the birthplace of volleyball. The sport was invented in 1895 by William Morgan, an instructor at a YMCA. The city is the site of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.

Morse said hosting Olympic volleyball matches would have an enormous economic impact for the western Massachusetts city of about 40,000 residents.

Boston 2024, the organizing committee for the Olympics bid, has offered the South Boston convention center as a possible venue for indoor volleyball, and Boston Common as a possible site for beach volleyball matches.
