(MyFoxBoston.com) -- On the first official day of spring training for pitchers and catchers in Fort Myers, Fla., the Red Sox nipped one lingering question in the bud.

Skipper John Farrell's contract was extended through the 2017 season with a club option for 2018, according to a release by the Sox.

In his first year with the team, Farrell led the Red Sox to a 97-65 record and a World Series title, the team's third in 10 years. But he followed it up with a disappointing 71-91 campaign in 2014.
