Voters reject bottle bill expansion, vote no on Question 2

Posted: Updated:
(MyFoxBoston.com) -- Massachusetts residents voted “no” on Ballot Question 2 Tuesday, which will keep the state's “Bottle Bill” as it is.

Proponents of the bill said the measure, which would have required deposits on all bottles of non-alcoholic drinks with some exceptions, said it would reduce litter around the state and increase recycling.

Those against the bill, however, said it was promoting an outdated form of recycling and would have increased costs to taxpayers.

It was the first measure to expand the bill in three decades.

The leaders of the Yes on 2 campaign expressed their disappointment in the outcome of Tuesday's election, while recommitting to advancing the causes of environmental protection and recycling in Massachusetts.

“We might have lost the vote on Question 2 today, and we will look closely at what we could have done better, to be more effective as we move forward.” said Janet Domenitz, executive director of MASSPIRG, one of the groups on the steering committee of Yes on 2 in a statement Tuesday night.
