OMAHA, Nebraska (
MyFoxBoston.com) -- The fifth American diagnosed with Ebola will be receiving a blood transfusion from a previous Ebola patient.
Ashoka Mukpo, a photo journalist who had been working in Liberia when infected, will be receiving the transfusion from former Ebola patient Dr. Kent Brantly in the hopes that the antibodies Dr. Brantly developed to overcome the virus will help Mukpo fight the disease as well.
Dr. Brantly, who also provided blood to former Ebola patient Dr. Rick Sacra, had been traveling through Kanas City, MO on Wednesday when asked to stop and donate. The blood was flown to The Nebraska Medical Center and Mukpo is scheduled to receive the transfusion on Monday.
"It's not a likely scenario that he would again have the same blood type," said Angela Hewlett, M.D., associate medical director of the Biocontainment Unit at The Nebraska Medical Center. "We are incredibly grateful that Dr. Brantly would take the time to do this, not once, but twice."
