CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Cavaliers, fresh off their 99-91 victory over Boston, are headed to Beantown with a 2-0 lead in their first round playoff series. LeBron James scored 30 points and Kyrie Irving added 26 to pace the Cavs' scoring. Isaiah Thomas scored 22 points for the Celtics, who scrapped and clawed until the final minutes. Boston's bench outscored Cleveland's 51-7. Game 3 is tomorrow night.
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - The Washington Capitals have evened their first round NHL playoff series at two games apiece by nipping the New York Islanders 2-1 on Nicklas Backstrom's goal 11:09 into overtime. Alex Ovechkin (oh-VECH'-kin) also scored and assisted on the decisive goal. The series now moves to Washington for Game 4 Thursday night.
STORRS, Conn. (AP) - UConn tight end Sean McQuillan has been charged with assault after a fight at an off-campus apartment complex. Campus police say they were called to the complex just before 11 p.m. on Friday night to break up a fight. They arrested McQuillan after finding another man suffering from what the police report describes as "significant facial injuries." Police have not released the victim's name.
STORRS, Conn. (AP) - UConn basketball coach Kevin Ollie says he has no plans to leave his job. The 42-year-old Ollie, who spent 13 years as an NBA journeyman before returning to his alma mater, has been linked to several NBA job openings since leading the Huskies to the 2014 NCAA championship. This week, several media outlets reported that Ollie is a leading candidate to replace Scott Brooks in Oklahoma City, even though Brooks has not been fired.
NEW YORK (AP) - Boston designated hitter David Ortiz has been suspended for one game and fined by Major League Baseball. MLB says Ortiz was punished for making contact with umpire John Tumpane during the fifth inning of Sunday's game against Baltimore. Ortiz was ejected by Tumpane after getting upset that third base ump Jerry Meals called a swing on an attempted check of a 1-1 pitch. Ortiz has appealed the penalty and will continue to play until the appeals process is complete.
ATLANTA (AP) - The Brooklyn Nets say forward Mirza Teletovic is probable for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference playoff series against Atlanta tonight after missing nearly three months because of blood clots. Teletovic was ruled out for the season in January, but his condition improved and he was cleared to play last week. He went through his third full practice at Georgia Tech. Atlanta leads the best-of-seven series after winning the opener 99-92.
NEW YORK (AP) - The New England Patriots will host the Pittsburgh Steelers to open the NFL season on Thursday night, September 10th. The game will match quarterbacks with six Super Bowl rings and nine Super Bowl appearances: Tom Brady versus Ben Roethlisberger.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Patriots left tackle Nate Solder reportedly had surgery for testicular cancer last spring. He went on to start every game, including the Super Bowl victory. ESPN says Solder was diagnosed during the team's voluntary offseason program last April after a standard physical. He had surgery three days later and returned by June for the end of organized team activities.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Two New England Patriots players are weighing in on former teammate Aaron Hernandez's murder conviction, calling it a sad situation. Special teams captain Matthew Slater and safety Devin McCourty attended the first day of voluntary team activities yesterday. Slater says he is praying for Hernandez and everyone else involved. He calls it a "tragic, sad situation, for so many different people, for so many different reasons." McCourty says two lives are gone.
FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - The sheriff who had former Patriots player Aaron Hernandez in custody for more than 18 months says he's a master manipulator and will probably do fine in prison now that he has been sentenced to life for murder. Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson says Hernandez knows how to use his charm and manipulate better than anyone he has ever seen. But he calls disrespect a "hot-button" issue for Hernandez.
BOSTON (AP) - An inspirational Venezuelan man has become the last finisher of this year's Boston Marathon, crossing the finish line about 20 hours after he started. Maickel Melamed finished at about 5 yesterday morning, after battling torrential downpours and thunderstorms for the last few miles. The 39-year-old Melamed has a form of muscular dystrophy that severely impairs his mobility.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The University of Connecticut baseball team welcomed its newest member: 5-year-old Grayson Hand of Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The Hartford Courant reports Hand, who is battling leukemia, joins the Huskies with the help of Team IMPACT, an organization that matches children with life-threatening and chronic illness to college sports teams.
