BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Most know the story of mobster Whitey Bulger, and he's especially familiar to people who live in South Boston. Still, there is a lost of buzz about watching his life play out on the big screen in the new movie Black Mass.
Black Mass tells the tale of Bulger's criminal grip on Boston in the 70's and 80's and FOX25's Heather Hegedus got a sneak peek. The Hollywood adaptation was filmed in and around Boston and is thorough. It covers much of the corruption and 11 murders Bulger was convicted of including the ruthless strangulation of the stepdaughter of his own associate Stephen Flemmi. It also take us through the rise and fall of disgraced FBI Agent John Connolly, who developed Bulger as an FBI informant to bring down the North End Mafia.
Brian Kelly is one of the federal prosecutors who won a conviction against Bulger. He plans to see the movie Friday, but we showed him clips Monday to see if Hollywood got it right.
"I think we're all interested in seeing it but we're hopeful that it doesn't glorify him because at the end of the day he really was a violent psycho-path and there's some very real victims in the Boston area who suffered because of him and his gang," Kelly said.
We also asked Bostonians if they plan to see the movie.
"I think I'll go see it yeah," a Roxbury resident said.
But others weren't so excited.
"I don't know if I need to go watch the movie I've heard about it my whole life," another resident said.
Kelly says he actually was in a small scene in the movie about being on to Bulger after he won the $14 million in the lottery, but the scene was cut. The movie comes out Friday, but Johnny Depp and the movie's other stars will be in Brookline Tuesday night for a special screening.
