Group calls Olympic spending ban 'smoke and mirrors'

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - A coalition that is pressing for a ballot question barring any state spending on a potential 2024 Olympics in Boston is dismissing a state budget amendment as "smoke and mirrors."

The amendment included by lawmakers in a compromise $38.1 billion spending plan would require public hearings and legislative approval before taxpayers money could be spent on the Olympics.

Evan Falchuk, a leader of the group seeking the 2016 ballot question, said in a statement that allowing legislators to approve spending creates an "Olympic size loophole."

The budget faces a final vote in the Legislature on Wednesday before going to Gov. Charlie Baker's desk.

Boston is expected to compete for the 2024 Summer Games with several other cities including Paris, Rome, Hamburg, Germany and Budapest, Hungary.
