Who were the victims of the Charleston church massacre?

CHARLESTON, S.C. (MyFoxBoston.com) — Nine people were shot and killed at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston Wednesday. The victim's identities became known as families were notified.

Dylann Roof, 21, has been arrested in connection with the shootings, which are believed to be racially-motivated.

Rev. Clementa Pinckney: Pinckney, 41, was a pastor at Emaunel AME and a member of the South Carolina Senate. He was married and the father of two children. President Barack Obama said in remarks about the shootings that he knew Pinckney personally.

Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton: A high school track coach and mother of Charleston Southern University student and athlete Chris Singleton.

Cynthia Hurd: The longtime librarian worked as manager at St. Andrews Regional Library. All of Charleston County's public libraries remained closed Thursday in honor of Hurd and all of the victims of the church shooting. She was 54.

Tywanza Sanders: A 2014 Allen University graduate, Sanders, 26, had been working at a barber shop. He was remembered as positive and helpful. It is being reported that Sanders tried to protect a family member during the shooting by jumping in front of them, but he and the family member were killed.

Myra Thompson: Wife of Rev. Anthony Thompson, Vicar at Holy Trinity REC. She was 59.

Ethel Lee Lance: A sexton at the church for 30 years, according to family members, who identified her as one of the victims to The Post and Courier. She was 70 years old.

Susie Jackson: A cousin of victim Ethel Lee Lance, Jackson, 87, was a longtime church member, according to The Post and Courier.  

Daniel L. Simmons: A retired pastor, Simmons, 74, attended bible study at Emanuel AME Church every Wednesday, according to news reports.


Rev. Depayne Middleton-Doctor: A mother of four children who had been director of the Community Development Block Grant Program for Charleston County. She was a church choir singer. Doctor was 49, according to The Post and Courier.
