2 friends of Boston marathon bomber sentenced to time behind bars

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) - Both Robel Phillipos and Azamat Tazhayakov, friends of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, were sentenced to jail time Friday.

Tazhayakov was convicted of obstruction of justice and conspiracy for removing Tsarnaev's backpack and laptop computer from his dorm room with another friend. He was sentenced to 42 months in prison.

The judge said that the 26 months Tazhayakov has already served will go towards his sentence.

Phillipos, another friend of friend of the bomber, was convicted of lying to the FBI days after the 2013 bombings. Former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, a friend of Phillipos' family, wrote a letter of support for Phillipos.

In a letter to Judge Douglas Woodlock, Dukakis said he "can't understand why justice would be served by incarcerating him."

Still, Phillipos was sentenced to 36 months behind bars. He was also fined $25,000 and will have a supervised release after getting our of prison.

He is set to surrender on July 24 to start his sentence.
