Sentencing phase in Tsarnaev trial to begin Tuesday, survivors speak out against death penalty

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- On Tuesday, jurors in the Marathon bombing trial with begin the sentencing phase for convicted bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Survivors of the 2013 Marathon bombing are speaking out and saying that they want to focus on healing. For some, that means sparing Tsarnaev from the death penalty.

The same jury that convicted Tsarnaev will return on Tuesday to hear arguments from both sides about whether he should live or die for the attack. They must make a unanimous decision for Tsarnaev to get the death penalty, which is a potential punishment that not all survivors are behind.

Jessica Kensky lost both legs after the bombing and provided powerful testimony in the trial. Kensky and her husband Patrick Downes tell the Boston Globe that, if there is anyone who deserves the ultimate punishment, it is Tsarnev.

The couple also believes that life in prison is the quickest way to ensure he can never hurt anyone again while getting him out of sight and mind as fast as possible.

The Richard family, who lost their young son Martin in the bombing, said the same thing last week. The family said that the appeals that could result from a death sentence would just prolong the process. The Richard family said they want him gone.
