Family helps woman with Stage 4 cancer finish race

Posted: Updated:
LAFAYETTE, La. -- It was a special moment this weekend for one woman crossing the finish line at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Loretta Girouard has stage four cancer. She was first diagnosed in 2013.

It started in her breast and spread throughout her body, including to her brain.

She decided she wanted to participate in this weekend's fundraising race and had planned to walk across the finish line. She ended up being unable to do it, however, so her family and friends stepped in to help her.

Despite the rough battle she faces, Girouard says she's not giving up.

"The positivity comes from wanting to be here, wanting to fight the battle, wanting to not let go of my kids and my family and to always be here and to fight those struggles," she said. "Giving up is not an option until you have no fight left."

According to the event's website, that race alone raised nearly $148,000 dollars to go towards breast cancer screening, treatment and education programs.
