Baker back from DC after asking for federal aid

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Governor Baker got back to Boston Monday evening after being in Washington, D.C. talking with officials at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Baker said the talks were "encouraging," and he also said President Obama told him he understood the impact on New England and wanted to help.

At the start of the month, Baker sent a letter to the congressional delegation after the first blizzard.

Now, he's asking for help for all four storms.

After relentless storms that have blasted the state, Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch says his city is one that could certainly use federal disaster help. He says this winter busted the snow budget.

"This year's just blown everything out of the water. So what the governor's doing is extremely important. I support him fully," Mayor Koch told FOX 25 political reporter Sharman Sacchetti.

And the mayor said he's increased his snow budget over the years, all the way up to $1.75 million this year.  He says this year, the city spent around $7 million.

In addition to covering some of those costs, federal disaster help would help cover some public safety as well.

"We have three peninsulas in our city, so when we have an event there's times when the coastal event can cut off the peninsula from the rest of the city so we put extra firemen on duty for example," said Mayor Koch.

The governor's office couldn't confirm an exact amount just yet.

The threshold for federal aid is $9.5 million.

Sacchetti checked in, and learned MEMA has confidence the first blizzard should qualify, but there are questions about each of the three storms that followed.

It's why the governor will be asking for all four storms to be grouped together. The deadline to file is the end of March. Cities and towns could get 75 percent reimbursement.
