Two weeks away from election day, Baker, Coakley spar in debate

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Two weeks away from election day, and nearly every poll you see shows Democrat Martha Coakley and Republican Charlie Baker tied.

Tuesday night, in an energetic Boston Globe-WGBH debate, both candidates stepped it up in their latest attempts to tilt the balance of this race.

They sparred over everything from taxes to jobs. When Baker was answering a question about his trouble with female voters, at one point Coakley smiled and responded, "just don't call me sweetheart."

Baker and Coakley each worked hard to pull ahead of the other, in a race that's been in a dead heat for weeks.

He went after Coakley on taxes, saying voters are tired of being nickel and dimed. And on mental health Coakley went after Baker for his record during the Weld administration.

Baker tried to play up a key theme of his campaign: Ending democrats' one party rule on Beacon Hill.

He raised questions about the governor's latest move to transfer 500 of his managers to union jobs, forcing Coakley to call for Patrick to be more transparent.

Baker defended himself over why he'd ever pose for a picture receiving an outsourcing excellence award while at Harvard Pilgrim.

Coakley defended herself over campaign finance problems. They say they want to win, but both candidates seem to be running not to lose.

More polls are expected out this week, and there are a couple more debates before election day on Nov. 4.
