Grossman encouraging voters to support Coakley after primary

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- One day after unseating 9-term incumbent John Tierney, Harvard Business School graduate and Marine Seth Moulton took the stage surrounded by Democrats at their so-called Unity Breakfast in Boston.

It's the uncomfortable tradition where former opponents suddenly support each other for the sake of the party. Tierney wasn't there.

"I just want to take a second to acknowledge the one Democratic leader who is not here with us this morning, but is very much here with us this morning and that is Congressman John Tierney," Moulton said.

Sixth District Congressional Republican candidate Richard Tisei says it just shows people want change. He believes he's the best one for the job. When Fox 25 Political Reporter Sharman Sacchetti asked him if Moulton's win made the race tougher, Tisei said, "It's not different for me because what I've always talked about is that I want to go to Washington and put the country first."

Back at the Unity Breakfast at the Omni Parker Hotel in Boston, after weeks of hammering Martha Coakley in the race for governor, Steve Grossman now says voters should support her.

"I'm going to do everything I can to look voters in the eye who supported me and say this is a person who will be a terrific governor," he said.

Grossman dismissed a poll that showed his supporters would now flock to Baker.

On the Fox 25 morning news, Attorney General Martha Coakley, who is billing herself as a Beacon Hill outsider, repeated messages we have heard from other Democrats like Senator Elizabeth Warren.

When asked if she was using that so-called "playbook," Coakley said, "Hey it's also out of Governor Patrick's playbook. It's out of a Democratic values playbook, which says look at states across the country with crumbling infrastructure with schools that don't work. They're not doing so well right now."

Ultimately, this race for governor is between two former losers, Coakley and Baker who are both looking to redeem themselves after previous defeats. Also on the Fox 25 morning news, Charlie Baker said, "My goal is to chase 100-percent of the vote," when asked about his work to bring in more female voters.

Baker said Coakley wants to raise taxes by billions and doesn't want to reform government. Coakley says Baker won't sign the so-called "people's pledge," but Baker suggested she is hypocritical for even asking.

"The first negative ads run by outside parties in this race were run against me by an organization that was affiliated with Martha Coakley's campaign. So I think to some extent hearing that kind of a charge from her is a little ridiculous," Baker said.

It was also a big night for women who had primary wins in the races for governor, treasurer and attorney general. The election is Nov. 4.
