Man charged with murder of Swampscott woman who disappeared

SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A man has been arrested for the murder of a Swampscott woman who disappeared last November.

Jaimee Mendez was last seen on Nov. 6, but her remains weren’t found until Jan. 28 on King’s Beach in Swampscott.

The Essex County District Attorney was investigating the case and last week an indictment was issued for Jason Fleury, 37, to charge him with murder.

Fleury was arrested Tuesday in Hampton, Virginia.

“This has been a long and pain-staking investigation, with a single goal; justice for Jaimee Mendez,” District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said.  “I want to thank every member of the investigative team including Massachusetts State Police detectives, Swampscott, Lynn and Salem Police as well as the many assets that were deployed during the search for Jaimee.”

Fleury was held in Virginia overnight and was in court Wednesday morning where he was arraigned as a fugitive from justice. State troopers picked him up and transported him back to Mass. where he's due in court Thursday to be arraigned on murder charges.

"He's going to be standing in a courtroom, in front of a judge. That's good," Mendez's aunt said.

She went on to say that they may never know what happened to Mednez, but say that Fleury being behind bars is a start on their road to healing.
