Gold coins missing from Boston Public Library, mayor requests meeting with board

Posted: Updated:
BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Gold coins have gone missing from the Boston Public Library after two valuable art works vanished last week. A special meeting of the Boston Public Library's Board of Trustees set to get underway next Wednesday at the request of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.

A BPL official said that a retired library employee sent an email to the city last week asking investigators to look into what happened to the gold coins, which were originally placed in the cornerstone of the McKim building.

"It is our estimation that these items went missing several decades ago," the official added.

This missing coins come a little over a week after an etching and engraving from Rembrandt and Durer, respectively, were reported missing and possibly stolen. The pieces are valued at more than $620,000. Soon after, the BPL was said to have given away its only copy of a historically important and valuable book, only to ask for it back.

Most recently, a city audit obtained by FOX25 shows the library system does not fully protect its most valuable collections.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was made aware of missing coins on Tuesday in a meeting with Amy Ryan and Jeff Rudman. A representative said Walsh was "very disappointed in yet another breach of security."

Walsh requested a special meeting of the library's board of trustees next Wednesday. It's expected to include a report on investigations into the missing artwork.
