Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will take "a couple of days off" to get his swing back in order as he fights through a slump at the plate.
Ortiz was 1-12 in the Sox' most recent series against Minnesota and has only mustered one hit in his last 20 at-bats. His batting average has slipped to .216, with six home runs and 18 RBI. His OPS is .679, well below his career average of .921.
The Red Sox have dropped three straight games and at 21-26 have the second-worst record in the American League. Only Oakland is worse.
Appearing on WEEI's Dale and Holley Show, Red Sox manager John Farrell said Ortiz will be lineup for a couple of days to work some things out on the side.
When approached by the media covering the Sox in Texas, Ortiz told them he "has the flu, you shouldn't be near me."
