Politicians react to Brady's deflategate punishment, other NFL issues

Posted: Updated:

(MyFoxBoston.com) -- Politicians reacted to the news of new England Patriot Tom Brady being suspended and fined after deflategate accusations.

Attorney General Maura Healey said, "I sure wish the NFL would spend a tenth of the time its spend on this on issues of domestic violence and sexual assault."

Her sphere of influence is more centered on a courtroom than on the gridiron, but thinks the NFL needs to focus it's efforts on violent behavior.

"I just struck that somebody like Ray Rice gets a two-game suspension and Tom Brady, over deflated balls, gets a four-game suspension," Healey said.

Rice, a Baltimore running back, received a lesser suspension than Brady, even though he was seen on-camera, knocking out cold his then-fiancee.

"In the league, they need more education, they need more outreach, they need more accountability! But instead, we're talking about air pressure and soft pigskin," she said.

Governor Charlie Baker wouldn't comment specifically on the sanctions, but says, "I'm a Patriots fan. And I'm a Tom Brady fan."

And like the governor, the controversy has done nothing to sway season ticket holder, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.

"I want to be at the game when Tom Brady plays against the Colts, the fifth game of the year, with Governor Baker. We're gonna go to Indianapolis for that game. It's gonna be interesting, because Tom Brady is probably gonna go for six touchdowns on that game."

And relevancy of those text messages and the other evidence, the notion that McNally is referring to himself as "the deflator" before, Wells said, "what drove the decision in this report was one thing. It was the evidence and I could not ethically ignore the impact."
