Gov. Baker signals support for changing texting law

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Governor Charlie Baker is now showing his support for a ban on hand-held cell phone use for Massachusetts drivers.

Baker's new show of support comes one day after a FOX Undercover Northeastern University School of Journalism investigation exposed trouble with the texting law. It's everywhere you look, even though the Commonwealth banned texting and driving in 2010.

But the law is ineffective because it's difficult for police to figure out if people are texting behind the wheel, or just calling someone on the phone. Massachusetts, a state with nearly 7 million people, has written about 11,000 tickets since the law passed.

But in Connecticut, a state about half the size and where hand-held cell use is banned, they issued more tickets in one year than the Bay State has since 2010.

A bill to ban hand-held cell phone use behind the wheel has failed in the past, but it's been filed again. A State House hearing on the issue is expected in the coming weeks.
