Another Mass. town puts brakes on pot dispensaries

Posted: Updated:

PALMER, Mass. (AP) — Palmer has become the latest Massachusetts community to put the brakes on medical marijuana dispensaries.

The Republican newspaper (http://bit.ly/15eUfDf ) reports the town council has approved a temporary moratorium on the siting of any dispensaries while officials study the issue and try to determine where such a facility could be located.

The voter-approved law that permits the use of marijuana for certain medical conditions allows for up to 35 non-profit dispensaries around the state. None has been established to date.

A growing number of communities have adopted temporary moratoriums or passed zoning rules that restrict where the dispensaries can go.

Attorney General Martha Coakley has ruled that towns cannot ban the facilities outright.
